Artists of Fame and Promise

Artists of Fame and Promise contains a selection of work that is new to the Gallery by several of our regular artists, seen alongside some works by more occasional exhibitors – although their names will be well known to you.
Perhaps the star piece is Poppies on a Blue Ground by Robin Philipson, the largest of his much loved (and sought-after) paintings of poppies that he painted in the late 70s and 80s. I used to show these annually at The Fine Art Society in Edinburgh, in its Great King Street days, and they were always the first paintings in the exhibition to sell. That popularity has continued – and grown – and these paintings still attract keen interest. Robin’s old friend, James McIntosh Patrick is also in this show, with one of his inimitable Angus landscapes and other near contemporaries such as Sandy Goudie, John Cunningham and – the slightly younger – John Boyd will also appear. More unusual is a late painting of a Shetland farm by J Q Pringle, a very rare and gentle painting.
More regular exhibitors include James Fullarton, Duncan Shanks, Gordon Mitchell, Christine McArthur and Glen Scouller.
