1924 -2007

Born in 1924 in Gourock, Bet Low attended Glasgow School of Art during the war years and Hospitalfield under James Cowie. After the war she attended Jordanhill Teacher college but after qualifying joined Unity Theatre in Glasgow where she worked as a designer. In 1963, in response to the lack of opportunity for young artists in Scotland, she co-founded with John Taylor the influential New Charing Cross Gallery in Glasgow, (succeeded by the Compass Gallery in 1969).

  In 1999 she made contributions to two books, A life of poet Burns Singer and The Tall Ships Race. She was awarded an Honorary Degree ofDoctor of Letters from Glasgow University.
