New ArrivalMary Fedden
New arrivals include a lovely watercolour by Mary Fedden – something of a departure for us but she is an artist I have admired for many years. Mary and her husband, Julian Trevelyan, both taught at the Royal College of Art after the war and had a major role in the development of several generations of young British painters – one of the most famous of whom being David Hockney.
Mary’s inimitable style became synonymous with a particularly English approach to still life painting which had enormous influence in the 1940s and 50s. She was a very private painter who was surprised at the huge popularity she achieved after her retirement as she began to exhibit widely. This little watercolour shows how well-deserved this new praise was.
