Under the SpotlightPhilip Braham

Mixed exhibitions such as our current September Song allow us to present small groups of new works by artists, some of whom might be new to the Gallery. Phil Braham is one of these – but his appearance in the Gallery is long overdue. His distinguished career has led him to a senior role at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. He has a refreshing and imaginative approach to landscape painting emerging from the Northern European engagement with landscape as a metaphor for the human condition.

Recent projects reflect on the temporal nature of our existence through personal recollection and collective history, set within the slowly evolving landscape that bears us forward. Fidelity to experience is fundamental to his practice, and this brings a poetic grace to his technical mastery of oil painting and silver-based photography.

We hope to present a larger group of Phil’s paintings over the next year or so, culminating in a solo exhibition. In the meantime I hope you can enjoy, via the website if not in person, the five works he has contributed to September Song.
