Fergusson and his wife, Margaret Morris, returned to Scotland in 1939 and settled in Glasgow – a more Highland city than Edinburgh, Fergusson believed. They lived in Clouston Street near the Botanic Gardens and its greenhouses and the meandering River Kelvin became his favourite subjects over the next twenty years.

This small painting is one of his most fresh and colourful of the series. Its format and view through the trees to promenaders and children playing on the grass harks back to his tiny studies in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, painted in the 1890s.

This picture was given by Margaret Morris to one of her closest associates in the Margaret Morris Movement in Glasgow.
