Glen ScoullerLike a Moth to a Flame

There are few places in southern Europe where strong vestiges of an ‘older’ way of life still exist, where things are done by hand – where man still toils the soil and fishes the sea using traditional methods. These are the subjects I have always enjoyed painting and the Portuguese Algarve is one of the rare places where this way of life can still be found, although since my first visit some twenty years ago it has seen many changes with that ‘old’ way of life becoming a little harder to find.

The beautiful colour and light of the coastline – with its sparkling emerald sea, fishermen’s beaches, rugged hinterland villages and whitewashed quintas – these hold a very strong attraction for me. I am drawn to them like a veritable ‘moth to a flame’.
